Oxford University announces the first ten Florida students to receive a Frost Scholarship
Ten of Florida’s brightest students have won Frost Scholarships to bring them to study at Oxford University later this year.
The Frost Scholarship Programme will offer ten scholarships each year for one-year Master’s courses in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (‘STEM’ subjects) at Oxford University, thanks to a donation from Phillip and Patricia Frost.
Only students from institutions in the State University System of Florida (SUSF) who are ordinarily resident in Florida are eligible for the scholarships, which will cover all university and college fees plus a grant for living costs.
The first cohort of Frost Scholars will take up their places for the 2014/15 academic year. Before they begin their studies in October, Frost Scholars will take part in an exclusive week-long orientation programme at one of Oxford’s oldest colleges, Exeter College, to introduce them to academic life at Oxford.
Professor Andrew Hamilton, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, said: ‘The University received some really strong applications from Florida students and we look forward to welcoming the successful candidates to Oxford in the autumn. We are delighted to enter into this exciting partnership with Phillip and Patricia Frost to help realise their goal of enabling excellent students from Florida to come to study at Oxford.’
Applicants from Florida were selected for a scholarship after going through Oxford’s competitive graduate admissions process.
Dr Phillip Frost said: ‘Our aim is to help excellent students from our home state of Florida to broaden their horizons and fulfil their dreams of graduate study in areas that contribute to the global improvement of health and scientific knowledge. What better place than Oxford, with its long tradition of academic excellence coupled with cutting-edge facilities, to help them realise this ambition?’
