The conference will evaluate the cultural and political legacies of the Carnation Revolution which brought an end to Europe's longest dictatorship, ushering in a return to democratic government, and belated independence for Portugal’s African colonies.

The event will take an intersectional approach to race and gender inequalities, and explore how these continue to play out to the present day in Portuguese literature and film. There will be UK premieres (with English subtitles) of the films Mulheres do meu País (dir Raquel Freire) and O Que Podem as Palavras? (dir Luísa Sequeira and Luísa Marinho).
